The most accurate way to measure a dog for mail order purposes is from sternum bone to level with the tail (as per the 'a' measurement on our first diagram) but make sure your dog is standing straight, facing forwards and not hunching his back. Therefore the 'a' measurement is our sizing measurement.
Being an old fashioned lot we still deal in inches. If your dog measures 23" then usually he will need a 24" garment. With a regular shaped dog the 'a' measurement will be the same size as the chest measurement ('c' on our second diagram) give or take an inch.
However, dogs come in many different shapes and sizes and we manufacture slim cut, dachsie and pug versions to cater for this.
For a whippet, lurcher and greyhound the neck and waist measurements are significantly smaller in relation to length and so they tend to fit into a Slim Dog Jumper. If you have a standard breed like a labrador, spaniel or pointer a good rule of thumb is that they will not fit into a Slim Dog Jumper unless the chest (c) is 2 inches less than the size you are buying. Therefore if you have a very small working labrador with an 'a' measurement of 27" and a 'c' measurement of 26" then you would probably need a 28" Slim Jumper (the dog's 'c' measurement is 2" less than 28").
For a Staffordshire, English, French or Miniature Bull Terrier, or a Boxer, Rottweiler or similarly broad shaped dog you are advised to call us first. If you have a slim one of these your dog may well fit into the ordinary sizes but often the tankie is the only option.
Dachsunds and skinny russells are usually fine in the four Dachsie sizes (though the 14" really is for the puppy, miniature miniature or runt of the litter dachsund) with the 16" being a good fit for a small miniature.
Pugs and broad terriers like Westies and Norfolks are usually fine in the two pug sizes.
a = length (the main sizing measurement in inches)
b = neck
c = chest
d = waist
If in any doubt about your dog's size please take all the measurements above and call us on 0845 123 5296. One of us will be happy to advise as best we can.
While we make far more dog coat and jumper sizes than anyone else we know of - from chihuahua to great dane - if your dog is very narrow or broad please let us know. It is very rare that we cannot fit a dog into a standard size (though bulldogs are particularly challenging). We can also make to order though this does carry an extra charge of £10 and on the whole can only be commissioned in Spring and Summer.
Our standard sizes can cope with anything from a miniature shetland to an 18 hand shire cross. If you have something bigger or smaller we will make to order, though again this does carry an extra charge of £10.
